In fall of 2018, a special volume of Issues was published to honor the work of William Newell. A special volume honoring the work of Julie Thompson Klein is scheduled for the fall of 2019. The content of this 2019 volume has already been determined.
Submissions considered for the regular 2019 volume, due out in June or July.
Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching conferenceA call for papers is now open for the next Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching conference in the UK, hosted by Keele University. These events focus on interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary teaching both in the UK and Europe. This is the fourth conference of this kind in the UK and highlights the appetite for the sharing of practice and theories surrounding interdisciplinary learning and teaching. Join INTERDIS to engage in discussions about integration, interdisciplinarity
AIS members and non-members are welcome to subscribe to INTERDIS , an Internet discussion list. The list is designed to promote the free exchange of ideas and information about topics such as integration, synthesis, interdisciplinarity and changing disciplines of interest to interdisciplinary researchers, teachers, and students.
AIS announces “About Interdisciplinarity”
The Association is pleased to announce the launch of a website ” About Interdisciplinarity .” This site is designed to provide an overview of the literature regarding key definitions, the history and philosophy of interdisciplinarity, and especially best practices for interdisciplinary research, teaching, administration, and public policy analysis.
We hope to build the website over time, and would thus encourage all with an interest in interdisciplinarity to feel free to make suggestions regarding works or insights that deserve more attention, or indeed any way that the site might be improved. Please suggest other works that merit mention on the site. We are interested in all sorts off feedback, from brief emails to more extensive advice on how a particular topic might best be addressed. We are particularly interested in reports from individuals who have tried one or more of the best practices outlined.

State of the Field
The 2013 volume of Issues in Interdisciplinary Studies contains three “State of the Field” articles, by Bill Newell, Julie Thompson Klein, and Rick Szostak. These papers were originally presented at the 2011 AIS conference. Since these papers provide a useful overview of the present state of the field of interdisciplinary studies, we have decided to allow access to these three papers here.
Alpha Iota Sigma International Honor Society accepting applications for chapters
Institutional members of the Association for Interdisciplinary Studies are eligible to form chapters in Alpha Iota Sigma International Honor Society . The mission of Alpha Iota Sigma is to recognize the academic scholarship and achievements of interdisciplinary students at the undergraduate level. Members have the opportunity to be recognized for their outstanding scholarly achievements, community engagement, and leadership in solving complex problems.
Interested in hosting an AIS Conference?
AIS has conference sites lined up through 2021, and we are interested in hearing from prospective hosts for future years. Any institutions that are interested in hosting a conference should contact AIS Board Conference Coordinator Roslyn Schindler at[email protected] .

AIS Website adds IMPACT, CITL’s academic journal, to its Connections listings
IMPACT, the Journal of the Center for Interdisciplinary Teaching & Learning (CITL), has been added to the Connections listings on the AIS Website. iMPACT publishes scholarly and creative non-fiction essays about the theory, practice and assessment of interdisciplinary education. It also publishes essays that explore compelling connections between the ideas of great thinkers from different disciplines and different times. Go>>
Environmental Psychology videos are new addition to Peer-reviewed Syllabi
Course lecture videos in Environmental Psychology by Daniel Stokols, University of California, Riverside, available free through ITunes U, have been added to the Peer-Reviewed Syllabi section of the AIS Website. It is the first fully online course included in the section. The web link can be found under Social Sciences in “A Collection of Interdisciplinary Syllabi.” The course examines the transactions between people and their everyday socio-physical surroundings from an interdisciplinary perspective encompassing the behavioral sciences, urban design, landscape architecture, public policy, and public health. The course can be accessed through iTunes U using the free iTunes U app for mobile phone and iPad, or via a web link, which can be accessed in the syllabi section. The web link provides access to the set of lecture videos only, whereas the iTunes U app for mobile devices provides supplemental course materials such as lecture slides, study guides, class-related web links, class outline and syllabus. Faculty who wish to submit syllabus material for consideration for inclusion in the Peer-reviewed Syllabi section may contact Debra Parker, editor, at e-mail [email protected]. DVDs of the Interdisciplinary Studies Today teleconference are available
AIS has a few DVDs still available of the teleconference Interdisciplinary Studies Today: Where Are We? which was presented to subscribing institutions in November 2005. AIS is offering the DVDs at the reduced price of $20 each. The teleconference featured a panel which included Julie Thompson Klein, Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies, Wayne State University, and an internationally respected authority on interdisciplinary research, education, and problem solving; Carolyn Haynes, Director of the Honors and Scholars Program and Special Assistant to the Provost for Academic Planning, Miami University; and AIS Executive Director William H. Newell, Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies, Miami University, and founding President of AIS. Please e-mail [email protected] for further information and availability.
